Thunderstorms and potential flash floods in Jazan and Najran | Weather warning
Advanced warning from the National Center for Meteorology
The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an advanced weather alert for the Jazan and Najran regions, warning of light to moderate rainfall, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms. The center explained that this weather pattern will be accompanied by active surface winds that may stir up dust and sand, reducing horizontal visibility, in addition to the possibility of hail and flash floods in some valleys and low-lying areas.
Weather details in the Jazan region
In the Jazan region, the center predicted moderate rainfall, which may be heavy in some areas, accompanied by thunderstorms. The affected areas include the governorates of Al-Harath, Al-Dayer Bani Malik, Al-Raith, Al-Ardah, Al-Aydabi, Fifa, and Haroub. The center warned that these conditions could lead to flash floods, urging residents to take precautions and stay away from valleys and wadis. This weather pattern is expected to continue until 9:00 PM.
Expected weather in Najran region
In the Najran region, the center warned of light to moderate rainfall accompanied by active winds and thunderstorms. The forecast includes the city of Najran and the governorates of Habuna, Thar, and Yadma. The center urged citizens and residents in these areas to follow weather updates and adhere to the instructions of the relevant authorities to ensure their safety, as the weather conditions are expected to continue until 9:00 PM.
The climatic context of the southwestern regions
These weather fluctuations are part of the typical climate pattern for the southwestern regions of the Kingdom, which are affected during certain times of the year by humid monsoon winds originating from the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea. The mountainous terrain in these areas, such as the Sarawat Mountains, contributes to lifting and condensing the humid air, leading to cloud formation and rainfall. This rainfall is a vital water source, replenishing groundwater and supporting the region's renowned agricultural sector, particularly the cultivation of coffee and tropical fruits.
Importance and potential impacts
Despite the significant benefits of these rains, they can sometimes present a challenge. The nature of heavy rainfall over short periods can lead to the formation of dangerous flash floods in dry valleys. Therefore, relevant authorities, primarily the National Center of Meteorology and the General Directorate of Civil Defense, play a pivotal role in protecting lives and property by issuing early warnings and providing necessary guidance to residents, such as avoiding crossing valleys during rainfall and remaining in safe locations. These weather conditions also affect transportation, as reduced visibility and rainfall make roads more hazardous, necessitating cautious driving.
