Rain in Hail and Asir: Meteorology issues advanced warnings today

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued today a series of advanced warnings regarding the unstable weather conditions in a number of regions of the Kingdom, highlighting in particular the Hail and Asir regions, which are experiencing rainfall of varying intensity accompanied by other weather phenomena that require caution and vigilance.

Light rain and brisk winds in Hail

In the Hail region, the center warned of light to moderate rainfall, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms. The report explained that this rain would be accompanied by brisk winds, potentially reaching strong levels, which would stir up dust and sand, leading to a significant decrease in horizontal visibility, especially on highways and in open areas. The center also warned of the possibility of flash floods in some valleys and ravines. It indicated that this weather condition had begun and would continue until the evening hours, urging residents and road users to exercise caution and stay away from flood-prone areas.

Heavy rains and possible flash floods in Asir

Meanwhile, the warnings were more severe for the Asir region, with the center forecasting heavy rainfall accompanied by strong thunderstorms, increasing the risk of flash floods. The warning included the city of Abha and the governorates of Khamis Mushait and Ahad Rafidah. The center added that the weather conditions in Asir would be accompanied by high-speed winds that could lead to near-zero horizontal visibility, in addition to heavy hail. The center urged relevant authorities, citizens, and residents in the region to exercise extreme caution and adhere to Civil Defense instructions to ensure their safety.

Climate context and the importance of alerts

These weather fluctuations are part of the Kingdom's typical climatic patterns, influenced by multiple factors. The Hail region, located in the north-central part of the Kingdom, is affected by low-pressure systems originating from the north during certain periods of the year, bringing rainfall that supports agriculture and replenishes groundwater reserves. The Asir region, with its towering mountains, benefits from humid monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean during the summer, making it one of the Kingdom's wettest regions. This rainfall plays a vital role in supporting the agricultural sector and ecotourism in the region, but it also presents a challenge due to the topography, which increases the speed of flash floods.

Expected effects and safety measures

The National Center of Meteorology plays a pivotal role in mitigating the risks posed by severe weather events. Early warnings enable relevant authorities, such as Civil Defense and Highway Patrol, to prepare in advance and enhance their readiness to respond to any emergency. At the local level, these warnings help raise public awareness about the importance of securing property and avoiding going out unless absolutely necessary during the peak of the weather event. These rains are expected to have a positive long-term impact by replenishing dams and groundwater, improving vegetation cover, and moderating the climate, thus benefiting both the environment and the community.
