Sean Evans will referee the Al Hilal vs Al Sadd match in the AFC Champions League
Australian refereeing team appointed for the round of 16 summit
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Referees Committee has officially announced its decision to assign the management of one of the most important Gulf and Asian derbies, the AFC Champions League Round of 16 match between Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal and Qatar's Al-Sadd. Australian international referee Shaun Robert Evans, known in sporting circles as "the penalty-scorer," has been selected to officiate this highly anticipated encounter. He will be assisted by an Australian team of assistant referees, Lakrindis George and Andrew Meimarakis, while Singaporean referee Muhammad Taqi will be in charge of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
The importance of confrontation in the new continental context
This encounter holds immense regional and continental significance, as it falls within the newly revamped AFC Champions League, now known as the "AFC Champions League for Elite," which features fierce competition among Asia's top clubs, with higher technical and financial standards than in previous editions. Matches between Saudi and Qatari clubs are always highly anticipated, given the rich history and intense rivalry between the two teams. Al-Hilal, nicknamed "The Boss" and the record holder for the most Asian titles, aims to continue its quest for another championship, while Al-Sadd of Qatar, the former continental champion, aspires to prove its worth and advance to the later stages. Therefore, selecting a refereeing team with extensive international experience is crucial to ensure the match proceeds smoothly and without incident.
Shawn Evans' history with Saudi and Qatari clubs
Sean Evans is no stranger to Gulf and Asian football; this is his second time refereeing an Al-Hilal match this season, having previously officiated their opening game against Al-Duhail of Qatar. He also refereed a match between Al-Ahli of Saudi Arabia and Al-Sadd of Qatar. Saudi fans will likely remember Evans well from his refereeing of the thrilling Asian derby between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad in the 2024 AFC Champions League quarter-finals, a match that ended in a 2-0 victory for Al-Hilal and saw him make a crucial decision to send off French star N'Golo Kanté. At the international level, Evans refereed the Saudi national team's match against Oman in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, as well as the group stage match between Al-Nassr of Saudi Arabia and Al-Rayyan of Qatar.
A distinguished international career and World Cup experience
Shaun Evans was born in Sydney, Australia in 1986 and began his refereeing career as an assistant referee in the Australian A-League in 2008. His passion for the game led him to dedicate himself fully to refereeing in 2016, subsequently earning his FIFA international badge. Evans boasts an impressive resume, having been selected as part of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, reflecting FIFA's confidence in his abilities. He has also officiated major finals such as the 2019 A-League Final, the 2021 A-Football Cup Final, and the 2022 AFC Cup Final.
Why was he nicknamed "the penalty kick lover"?
In addition to his diverse experience, which includes officiating matches in the Chinese Super League and the Indonesian League, Evans is known for his strictness on the pitch. Throughout his long professional career, the Australian referee has officiated 274 official matches, issuing 1,009 cards, including 48 red cards. His nickname, "The Penalty Shooter," is justified by his awarding of 89 penalties during his career, a high number that reflects his accurate observation of fouls inside the penalty area and his decisiveness in making crucial calls. This will put Al-Hilal and Al-Sadd players under intense scrutiny in every challenge inside the box during their Round of 16 clash.
