UN and Saudi Arabia welcome the ceasefire between America and Iran

UN call for adherence to the truce and the establishment of peace

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued an urgent and decisive appeal to all parties to the current conflict to fully comply with their obligations under international law. Guterres stressed the importance of strict adherence to the ceasefire agreement, considering it a cornerstone for paving the way towards a lasting and comprehensive peace in a region long plagued by conflict.

In a related development, Guterres expressed his strong welcome for the joint declaration issued by the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, calling for a two-week ceasefire. This positive development offers a glimmer of hope for international diplomacy. For his part, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed his deep hope that this declaration would contribute to the immediate alleviation of the severe suffering endured by civilians, who have lived through weeks of terror and continue to face grave threats to their lives and futures. Türk urged all parties to act in good faith to ensure that this initial step is transformed into a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement.

Saudi Arabia welcomes and praises Pakistani mediation

Regionally, Saudi Arabia was quick to welcome the announcement by US President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif that Washington and Tehran had reached a ceasefire agreement. The Kingdom commended Islamabad's tireless and fruitful diplomatic efforts, noting in particular the pivotal role played by Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of the Defence Force and Army Staff of Pakistan, in bridging the gaps and facilitating this historic agreement.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement affirming Riyadh's full support for the mediation efforts led by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The statement clarified that the ultimate goal is to reach a lasting agreement that guarantees security and stability and addresses fundamentally all contentious issues that have destabilized the region for decades.

The strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz and its global impact

The Saudi statement did not neglect to mention one of the most important geopolitical issues in the world: freedom of navigation. The Kingdom stressed the paramount importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to international shipping, in full compliance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and without imposing any restrictions that would impede trade.

Historically, the Strait of Hormuz has been the world's most vital energy artery, with approximately one-fifth of the world's daily oil consumption passing through it. Any closure or threat to navigation in this narrow waterway would not only affect the Gulf Arab states, but its catastrophic impact would extend to the entire global economy, leading to a dramatic surge in energy prices and inflation in global markets. Therefore, reaching a de-escalation between the United States and Iran is of paramount importance, extending beyond regional boundaries to encompass the stability of the international economic system.

The expected impact of the agreement on the regional and international arenas

This agreement, if it holds, is expected to have far-reaching positive effects. Domestically, it will give civilians a chance to recover and rebuild what the tensions have destroyed, as well as facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid. Regionally, it will contribute to reducing political and sectarian polarization in the Middle East and enhance the chances of success for diplomatic initiatives to resolve other crises in the region. Internationally, securing energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz will send a reassuring message to global markets, thus bolstering the stability of the global economy at a critical juncture that requires concerted international efforts to overcome successive crises.
