Saudi Arabia is investing in three national parks to support ecotourism
A strategic step towards sustainability and ecotourism
In a move reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to achieving its ambitious environmental and development goals, the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification announced the signing of strategic investment contracts for the development and operation of three major national parks: Arar National Park in the Northern Borders Region, and Thilan and Saad National Parks in the Riyadh Region. These contracts, which extend for periods of up to 25 years, aim to effectively engage the private sector in achieving the objectives of Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative.
General context: Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative
These projects represent a practical implementation of the Kingdom's overarching goals. Since the launch of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has placed sustainable development and environmental protection at the heart of its future plans, aiming to diversify the national economy and improve the quality of life. The "Saudi Green Initiative," launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021, serves as the environmental framework for this vision, targeting the planting of 10 billion trees and the rehabilitation of 40 million hectares of degraded land. Developing national parks is a cornerstone of this initiative, contributing to the protection of local ecosystems, increasing green spaces, and providing natural destinations for citizens, residents, and tourists.
Details of investment projects and their expected impact
The signed contracts included three parks of unique environmental and touristic importance:
- Arar National Park (Northern Borders): Spanning over 14 million square meters, the project aims to transform it into a comprehensive tourist destination by providing service and operational facilities, as well as diverse recreational and environmental activities. The project will include dedicated walking and cycling trails, bird and wildlife observation platforms, rural lodges, camping and barbecue areas, and cafes and restaurants, creating promising economic opportunities for the region.
- Thilan National Park (Riyadh Region): Spanning 5 million square meters, this park is distinguished by its natural and environmental diversity and historical significance. Investment here will focus on establishing integrated camps offering unique tourism experiences, such as a visit to the historic Jahdar al-Yamami Cave, along with developing hiking trails, a wildlife sanctuary, and an environmental awareness center, making it an educational and recreational destination for families and those interested in nature and heritage.
- Saad National Park (Riyadh Region): Spanning two million square meters, this park will be developed into a hub for adventure and recreation amidst nature. The project encompasses diverse activities such as desert safaris, paragliding, and hot air balloon rides, along with sports fields and relaxation facilities. It will also host events, festivals, and an open-air theater, and offer rural lodges, a handicrafts center, and stargazing platforms, providing a comprehensive experience that combines adventure, culture, and leisure.
Economic and environmental importance
The importance of these projects extends beyond the environmental aspect, encompassing significant economic and social dimensions. Locally, they will contribute to creating hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, stimulating local economies in surrounding areas, and opening new investment opportunities for entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Nationally, these parks enhance Saudi Arabia's position as a global destination for ecotourism and adventure tourism, diversifying the tourism product in line with the National Tourism Strategy. Internationally, these initiatives underscore the Kingdom's commitment to addressing global environmental challenges and actively contributing to efforts to combat climate change and preserve biodiversity.
