The “Makkah Route” initiative continues to facilitate the Hajj journey within the framework of Vision 2030
The official spokesperson for the General Directorate of Passports, Major Nasser Al-Otaibi, confirmed that the Saudi Ministry of Interior is successfully continuing the “Makkah Route” initiative for the sixth consecutive year. This initiative is a key pillar of the Guests of God Service Program, which falls under the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, and aims to bring about a qualitative shift in the Hajj experience, transforming their spiritual journey into a smooth and comfortable experience from the moment they leave their home countries.
Background of the initiative and its ongoing expansion
The Makkah Route Initiative was launched on a trial basis in 2017 before being officially inaugurated the following year. Its aim is to streamline entry procedures for pilgrims arriving in the Kingdom from their home countries. Initially operating in just two countries, the initiative quickly proved highly successful, leading to its expansion to include more countries and airports. This Hajj season, the initiative is being implemented across 17 entry points in 10 countries: Morocco, Indonesia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Côte d'Ivoire, the Maldives, and, for the first time this year, Senegal and Brunei Darussalam, reflecting international confidence in the efficiency of Saudi Arabia's organizational capabilities.
An integrated mechanism for serving the guests of God
The initiative aims to provide comprehensive, high-quality services starting from the pilgrim's home country. These services include issuing Hajj visas electronically, collecting biometric data, and completing passport control procedures at the departure airport after verifying compliance with health requirements. The process also includes coding and sorting pilgrims' luggage according to their transportation and accommodation arrangements within the Kingdom. Thanks to these pre-arranged procedures, upon arrival at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, pilgrims are transferred directly via dedicated lanes to waiting buses that transport them to their accommodations in Makkah and Madinah. Partner agencies then ensure the smooth and convenient delivery of their luggage.
