Cooling the Holy Sites: 6000 misting columns for the comfort of the pilgrims

Integrated efforts to enhance the comfort of pilgrims in the holy sites

As part of its extensive preparations for the Hajj season, Kadana Development and Investment Company, the master developer of the Holy Sites and the executive arm of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites, announced the full operation of its misting and watering systems. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for pilgrims and provide a comfortable environment that facilitates their performance of rituals with ease and tranquility, especially given the expected high temperatures during the Hajj season.

This step comes as part of a series of development projects in the holy sites, reflecting the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to providing the highest quality services to pilgrims and Umrah performers, using the latest technologies and innovative engineering solutions.

Project details: Advanced technology to address climate challenges

The air cooling system consists of a vast network of over 6,000 misting columns, powered by five main operational stations. This network is designed to cover extensive pedestrian walkways and open areas frequented by pilgrims in Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah. These columns spray a fine mist of water into the air, reducing the ambient temperature by several degrees Celsius and providing relief from the hot and dry conditions. The system has a production capacity of 1,500 cubic meters per hour, ensuring continuous and effective cooling during peak hours.

In a related development, the “Watering System” has been established to provide chilled and purified drinking water to pilgrims. The system comprises five stations connected to more than 25,000 water taps, strategically distributed throughout the holy sites to ensure easy access. This network aims to meet the pilgrims' water needs and prevent heat stress and dehydration.

Historical background and strategic importance

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always placed paramount importance on serving the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors. The infrastructure in the holy sites has witnessed tremendous development, from providing basic services to implementing mega-projects aimed at accommodating millions of pilgrims and ensuring their utmost comfort and safety. Air conditioning and water supply projects are an extension of this historical legacy, but today they utilize sustainable solutions and modern technologies to address climatic challenges, especially since the Hajj season coincides with the region's extremely hot summer months.

These projects are of paramount importance both locally and internationally. Locally, they embody the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, specifically the "Guests of God Service Program," which aims to enrich the religious and cultural experience of pilgrims. Internationally, these efforts highlight the Kingdom's ability to efficiently and effectively manage one of the world's largest gatherings of people, sending a reassuring message to Muslims worldwide that their safety and comfort are the top priority.
