Saudi-Uzbek relations: A message to strengthen the strategic partnership

His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, received a written message from His Excellency President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The message focuses on the strong bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and explores ways to support and enhance them in various areas of mutual interest.

The message was received on behalf of the Crown Prince by His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs, during his meeting at the Ministry's headquarters in Riyadh with His Excellency Bakhtiyor Saidov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The meeting included a comprehensive review of bilateral relations, as well as an exchange of views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Historical background and growing context of relations

This message comes amidst a growing momentum in Saudi-Uzbek relations, which have entered a new phase of strategic partnership in recent years. The visit of His Excellency President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to the Kingdom in August 2022 marked a pivotal turning point, during which a package of agreements and memoranda of understanding worth over $12 billion was signed, covering vital sectors such as energy, renewable energy, petrochemicals, infrastructure, agriculture, and tourism.

Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power is a prime example of this cooperation, leading massive investments in Uzbekistan’s clean energy sector, contributing to Tashkent’s goals of diversifying energy sources and aligning with the sustainability principles of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Strategic importance and expected impact

Domestically, deepening relations with Uzbekistan is part of the Kingdom’s strategy to diversify its international partnerships eastward and open new markets for Saudi investments in the promising Central Asian region. For Uzbekistan, a partnership with a major economic power like Saudi Arabia provides much-needed investment inflows to modernize its economy and develop its infrastructure, as well as enhance its regional standing.

Regionally and internationally, this rapprochement reflects a model of fruitful cooperation between the Arab world and Central Asia, contributing to enhanced stability and economic development in the region. Furthermore, the ongoing coordination between Riyadh and Tashkent in international forums strengthens their political influence and supports shared causes, particularly within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

The exchange of such diplomatic messages confirms the keenness of the leadership of both countries to continuously follow up on the course of cooperation, ensure the implementation of the agreements concluded, and explore new horizons for partnership that benefit the Saudi and Uzbek peoples.
