Riyadh rain: Advanced warning from the Meteorology Department and Civil Defense alerts

Advanced warning from the National Center for Meteorology

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an advanced weather alert, indicating the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall in several governorates of the Riyadh region. According to the alert, this weather system may be accompanied by hail (small snowflakes) and strong winds that could stir up dust and reduce horizontal visibility.

The areas directly affected in the Riyadh region include the governorates of Al-Dilam, Al-Muzahmiya, Al-Hariq, Al-Kharj, and Hawtat Bani Tamim. The center urged citizens and residents in these areas to exercise extreme caution and be prepared to deal with potential weather fluctuations.

Important warnings from the Civil Defense

Based on warnings issued by the Meteorology Center, the General Directorate of Civil Defense urged everyone to exercise caution and adhere to official guidelines and instructions. Civil Defense emphasized the importance of staying away from low-lying areas, valleys, and flood channels due to the increased risk of flash floods. It also warned against attempting to cross water accumulations by vehicle or on foot, as this poses a serious threat to life. The Directorate called for continuous monitoring of information issued by official sources and urged the public not to be misled by rumors.

Climatic context: Spring rainy season in Saudi Arabia

This rainfall is part of the Kingdom's typical spring weather pattern, known locally as the "Marawih" or "Sarayat" period. This time of year is characterized by increased activity of low-pressure systems originating from the Mediterranean and Red Seas, which converge with warm, humid air masses from the south. This convergence leads to a state of extreme atmospheric instability, creating conditions conducive to the formation of powerful cumulonimbus clouds that produce heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and hail within a short period. This explains the frequent warnings about the risk of flash floods.

Expected impacts and the importance of preparedness

Locally, these rains are expected to affect traffic in cities and on highways connecting the aforementioned governorates. Flash floods also pose a risk to property and infrastructure in areas lacking effective drainage networks. However, these rains are of great regional and environmental importance, as they contribute vitally to replenishing the groundwater reservoirs upon which the Kingdom heavily relies for its water supply. They also support vegetation and natural pastures, positively impacting the environment and wildlife. Prior preparation and adherence to safety instructions are key factors in transforming this weather event from a potential hazard into a blessing for the land and its people.
