The Saudi and Dutch foreign ministers discuss waterway security
In a diplomatic move reflecting the depth of bilateral relations and shared interest in regional stability, His Highness Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs, received His Excellency Tom Berendsen, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in Riyadh. The meeting provided an important platform to explore ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and discuss key regional and international challenges.
During the meeting, a comprehensive review of cooperation between the two friendly countries was conducted, with a focus on ways to support and develop it across various political and economic levels. The two ministers also exchanged views on current developments, with the security of international waterways being a top priority in the discussions, given its vital importance to global trade and the stability of energy supplies.
Strategic importance of waterway security
The debate surrounding the security of waterways has become paramount in light of the geopolitical tensions in the region. Vital waterways such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are not merely maritime passages; they are major arteries of the global economy, through which a significant portion of the world's oil and trade flows. Saudi Arabia, as the world's largest oil exporter, is a pivotal player in ensuring the stability of energy markets, while the Netherlands, with its Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, serves as a key gateway for international trade. Therefore, any threat to these waterways casts a negative shadow not only on the economies of these two countries but on the global economy as a whole.
A unified international stance against regional threats
This Saudi-Dutch coordination comes in the context of escalating security challenges in the region, including past attacks targeting oil tankers and vital infrastructure. In this regard, the Dutch side reiterated its strong condemnation of attacks targeting the security of Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region, emphasizing the need for concerted international efforts to deter actions that violate international law and threaten freedom of navigation. This position reflects a shared understanding of the importance of maintaining a rules-based international order to ensure peace and security.
Promising prospects for bilateral relations
Relations between Riyadh and Amsterdam extend far beyond political and security coordination, underpinning a strong and growing economic partnership. The Netherlands is a key trading partner for the Kingdom within the European Union. With the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, there is a focus on strengthening this cooperation to encompass promising sectors such as renewable energy, advanced technology, food security, and sustainable agriculture, opening up broader horizons for joint investments and the exchange of expertise.
The reception was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Saud bin Mohammed Al-Sati, which confirms the importance that the Kingdom attaches to these talks.
