The climatic context of the Jazan region
The Jazan region, located in the southwestern part of Saudi Arabia, is known for its unique geographical diversity, combining low-lying coastal plains (the Tihama Plain) with towering mountain ranges (the Sarawat Mountains). This topographical diversity plays a pivotal role in shaping its climate. The region is influenced by monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean, making it one of the wettest areas in the Kingdom, particularly during the summer and autumn seasons. Historically, agriculture in Jazan, renowned for its mango, coffee, and banana production, has relied heavily on these seasonal rains. However, the occasional heavy rainfall, especially in the highlands, leads to rapid and dangerous flash floods through the valleys, posing a constant challenge to the population and infrastructure.
The importance and expected effects of the warning
This warning is of paramount importance at the local level, as it aims to protect lives and property. The danger lies in the fact that the strong winds accompanying the rain could drastically reduce horizontal visibility, increasing the risk of road accidents, especially in mountainous areas. Flash floods also threaten villages located in wadi beds and impede transportation. Regionally, this weather event is part of a broader climatic pattern affecting the southwestern highlands of the Kingdom, including the regions of Asir, Najran, and Al-Baha, necessitating comprehensive coordination between civil defense departments and relevant authorities in these areas. Government agencies, led by the National Center for Meteorology and Civil Defense, are working to raise awareness among citizens and residents, advising them to stay away from wadi beds and water accumulations and to follow safety guidelines to ensure their well-being until the weather event subsides.
