The truth about Joachim Löw coaching Ghana in the 2026 World Cup

Joachim Löw denies rumors of coaching Ghana

Former Germany coach Joachim Löw has denied all reports linking him to a return to coaching with the Ghana national football team. In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Löw categorically stated that he has not received any official contact from the Ghana Football Association, adding that all media reports are baseless rumors.

The local newspaper Ghana Soccer Net had sparked widespread controversy in sporting circles after publishing a report stating that the veteran German coach was on the verge of signing a short-term contract to lead the "Black Stars" during the 2026 World Cup finals. These speculations came in the wake of the Ghanaian Football Association's decision to dismiss national coach Otto Addo last Tuesday, due to declining results, the latest of which was a 2-1 loss to the German national team in a friendly preparatory match.

Official response from the Ghana Football Association

In a related development, Winfried Schäfer, the German technical director of the Ghana Football Association, expressed his astonishment at the news. Speaking to the German Press Agency (dpa) on Friday, Schäfer stated that he was completely surprised by the reports of a potential agreement with his compatriot, Joachim Löw. Schäfer clarified that he had no information on the matter, emphasizing that the selection and appointment of the new technical director was not within his purview, but rather the direct responsibility of the Ghana Football Association president, Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku, who is handling this sensitive issue.

Löw's historic journey with the German national team

Joachim Löw is considered one of the most prominent coaches in the history of modern football, his name synonymous with the golden era of the German national team. Löw led "Die Mannschaft" from 2006 to 2021, successfully building an exceptional generation of players who culminated their efforts in winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Their impressive performance included a historic 7-0 victory over the host nation and a triumph over Argentina in the final. Since stepping down from his post following Germany's elimination from Euro 2020, Löw has preferred to stay out of the spotlight, turning down numerous lucrative coaching offers from major clubs and various national teams.

The challenges of the "Black Stars" in the next stage

On the other hand, the Ghanaian national team, known as the "Black Stars," is experiencing a period of technical and administrative instability. Following their historic achievement of reaching the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the team has suffered from inconsistent performances and declining results at both the continental and international levels. The Ghanaian Football Association's search for a new head coach is part of a serious effort to rebuild the team and restore its footballing prestige in Africa, especially with important international competitions approaching.

Löw's conditions for returning to the world of coaching

Despite categorically denying any interest in coaching Ghana at present, Joachim Löw left the door open to a possible return to management in the future. He told Sky Sports that if he were to take on a new coaching role, it would certainly be at the national team level, not club level. The 64-year-old added: “Considering my long career and accumulated experience in international football, coaching a national team would be the ideal and logical choice for me.”.
