Tourism in Syria is expected to increase by 80% by 2025: Figures and details
The tourism sector in the Syrian Arab Republic witnessed an unprecedented recovery and record growth indicators during the current year, as official data revealed an 80% increase in the number of Arab and foreign tourists coming to the country, in the period extending from the liberation of the country in December 2024 until the end of November 2025, compared to the same period of the previous year.
Official figures and statistics
In detailing this rapid growth, Syrian Tourism Minister Mazen Al-Salhani explained in an official statement that the total number of visitors and tourists (Syrians, Arabs, and foreigners) recorded an overall increase of 18% during 2025 compared to 2024. The total number reached 3.56 million tourists compared to 3.01 million tourists in the previous year, reflecting a state of rapid recovery for the sector.
Al-Salhani pointed out that Syrian expatriates were a major contributor to this figure, with their numbers reaching 2.69 million visitors, an increase of 6%. However, the most significant leap was in the number of Arab and foreign tourists, which rose from 483,000 in 2024 to approximately 868,000 currently. The minister specifically mentioned foreign visitors, whose numbers reached 377,000, representing a 79% annual increase from just 210,000 last year.
Return of global and European interest
The ministry explained that this significant increase in foreign tourist numbers was driven by exceptional growth from countries that were not at the forefront of the scene in recent years. Arrivals from Turkey saw a staggering jump of over 1063%, followed by Germany with a growth rate of 174%, then Britain at 155%, and Norway at 151%. These figures clearly indicate a shift in tourism activity from a limited regional scope to a broader international one, and Syria's return to its position as a global heritage and cultural destination.
Historical context and tourism assets
These figures serve as a reminder of Syria's long-standing historical significance as one of the cradles of human civilization. The country boasts a vast cultural heritage, including some of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in history, such as Damascus and Aleppo, as well as archaeological sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The return of security and political stability following the events of December 2014 has been instrumental in encouraging international travel agencies and independent tourists to reinstate Syrian cities in their itineraries, allowing them to explore the country's unique cultural and architectural diversity.
Expected economic and investment impact
The significance of this tourism boom extends beyond mere statistics, encompassing a direct economic impact on the Syrian national economy. The tourism sector is a key driver of growth, a vital source of foreign currency, and a generator of employment opportunities in the hospitality, transportation, and logistics sectors. The Ministry affirmed that these positive indicators provide a solid foundation for attracting European and Arab investments, particularly in hotel rehabilitation projects, the development of the air transport sector, and the promotion of sustainable tourism, thus heralding a new era of economic prosperity based on openness and cultural exchange.
