Al-Baha rains today: Heavy weather and thunderstorms hit the region
The Al-Baha region and its governorates witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall today, accompanied by strong thunderstorms and hail in some areas, leading to flash floods in several valleys and ravines. The rainfall affected Al-Baha city and its suburbs, as well as vital governorates such as Al-Aqiq, Al-Qura, and Bani Hassan, and their affiliated administrative centers. The land was thoroughly soaked, and the rain created a breathtaking natural scene, revitalizing the region.
The climatic context of the Al-Baha region
The Al-Baha region, nestled within the towering Sarawat Mountains in southwestern Saudi Arabia, is distinguished by its unique climate. Enjoying a temperate summer and a cold winter, it is renowned for its rugged mountainous terrain covered with dense forests of juniper and wild olive trees. This distinctive geography makes it ideally suited to receive abundant seasonal rainfall, particularly during the spring and summer months, making this rainfall a pivotal event that directly impacts all aspects of life in the region.
The importance and expected effects of rainfall
These rains hold significant strategic importance both locally and nationally. Locally, they are the primary source of replenishment for groundwater wells and dams, most notably the Wadi Al-Aqiq Dam, a vital water source for the region. The rains also directly support the agricultural sector, for which Al-Baha is renowned, where a variety of fruits such as pomegranates, grapes, and apricots are cultivated. Furthermore, the rainy weather and the resulting lush greenery stimulate domestic tourism, attracting visitors from across the Kingdom to enjoy the stunning natural scenery and the temporary waterfalls that form after the rainfall.
Official warnings and preparations
However, this weather pattern is not without its challenges and risks. The National Center for Meteorology issued advanced warnings about heavy rainfall and the potential for flash floods. The Civil Defense Directorate in the Al-Baha region raised its alert level and urged citizens and residents to exercise caution, stay away from valleys, floodplains, and low-lying areas, and strictly follow official guidelines issued through approved platforms to ensure their safety. These precautionary measures are essential for dealing with the unpredictable weather conditions in mountainous regions.
