Zakho and Al-Shabab face penalties in the Gulf Champions League: fines and suspensions
The Disciplinary Committee of the Arabian Gulf Cup Football Federation issued a series of strict disciplinary decisions on Wednesday against Iraqi club Zakho and Saudi club Al-Shabab, following the unfortunate incidents that occurred during their semi-final match in the Gulf Champions League. These decisions came after a thorough review of the match officials' and observers' reports, reaffirming the federation's zero-tolerance policy towards any breach of sportsmanship.
The penalties included hefty fines totaling 600,000 Qatari Riyals for both clubs, with each club paying 300,000 Riyals. They were also ordered to bear all costs of damages resulting from their fans' misconduct, in accordance with Article (56) of the Disciplinary Regulations. The committee also issued a formal warning to both clubs to prevent any recurrence of such violations in the future.
Details of individual penalties
The decisions were not limited to collective penalties, but also extended to members of the Iraqi Zakho team due to their unsportsmanlike conduct. The committee decided to impose a fine of 6,000 Qatari Riyals on the team supervisor, Taha Zakhuli, and ban him from accompanying the team for four official matches. Player Amjad Atwan (number 14) and goalkeeper Ali Kadhim (number 12) were each fined 5,000 Qatari Riyals and suspended for four matches for attempted assault, in accordance with Article (54) of the regulations.
Context and importance of the tournament
The Gulf Champions League is a prestigious regional competition that brings together elite clubs from the Arabian Gulf region, characterized by fierce competition and widespread fan support. The advanced stages, such as the semi-finals, are particularly crucial as they determine the champion. The events that occurred during the Zakho-Al Shabab match do not reflect the true spirit of fair play that the tournament strives to uphold, necessitating decisive intervention from the organizers.
Expected impact of the decisions
These decisions are expected to have a strong deterrent effect on all clubs participating in regional tournaments. Locally, the fines will place a financial burden on both clubs, and the player suspensions will directly impact Zakho's performance in upcoming matches. Regionally, these penalties send a clear message from the Arabian Gulf Cup Federation that stadium safety and sportsmanship are top priorities, and that any transgression will be met with strict penalties to preserve the reputation and civilized image of Gulf football.
The Disciplinary Committee concluded its statement by emphasizing its full commitment to applying the approved regulations and systems with complete transparency and fairness, stressing the importance of all elements of the game adhering to discipline both on and off the field, which contributes to the success of the competitions and maintaining their bright image.
