The initiative to transport pilgrims' shoes in the Grand Mosque: Goodbye to overcrowding

The courtyards of the Grand Mosque witnessed the launch of a unique field initiative, the first of its kind, aimed at addressing one of the most prominent organizational challenges facing pilgrims and worshippers: the accumulation of shoes at the main entrances. This step involves activating a smart logistics service that collects and transports pilgrims' shoes from the entry points and returns them to the exit points after they have completed their rituals. This proactive measure aims to improve traffic flow and eliminate visual pollution.
The initiative's working mechanism and pathways
The project, as observed by field sources, is based on a precise system that begins with collecting pilgrims' shoes at the King Fahd and King Abdulaziz gates. This is done according to a numbered and organized mechanism that ensures no belongings are lost. The shoes are then transported via dedicated and fully secured routes to the final collection point at the Marwa exit. This process allows pilgrims to fully concentrate on their worship and perform Tawaf and Sa'i without being preoccupied with carrying their shoes, worrying about losing them in the crowds, or having to return to the entrance to retrieve them.
Context of the challenge and the importance of innovative solutions
This initiative derives its importance from the historical and operational background of crowd management in the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Storing shoes has always posed a logistical challenge, especially during peak seasons like Ramadan and Hajj, when the accumulation of shoes in front of the gates or pilgrims carrying them in plastic bags disrupts entry, obstructs the flow of worshippers, and creates an unsightly appearance incompatible with the sanctity and purity of the place. Therefore, the shift from traditional solutions (fixed shelves) to dynamic solutions (smart transportation) represents a qualitative leap in field service management.
Strategic partnership with "Misk"
This innovative solution is the product of the "Diwan of Innovation" program, an initiative of the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (MiSK), developed in direct collaboration and integration with the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques. This collaboration reflects the commitment of relevant authorities to empowering Saudi youth ideas and transforming them into impactful projects that serve visitors to the Two Holy Mosques. The service is designed to be a radical and rapid solution, based on flexible handling and precise delivery.
Expected impact and alignment with Vision 2030
This approach aligns perfectly with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 and the Guests of God Service Program, which aim to facilitate the Umrah journey and enrich the religious and cultural experience of pilgrims. By harnessing social innovation to provide sustainable solutions, the quality of services offered is enhanced, contributing to accommodating the increasing numbers of Umrah pilgrims expected in the coming years. The relevant authorities are counting on the success of this initiative to promote a culture of smart crowd management solutions, ensuring that the courtyards and entrances of the Grand Mosque remain free of obstacles and enhancing the civilized image of the holiest place on earth.
