Meteorological Department: Cold wave hits 5 regions, temperatures below zero

The National Center for Meteorology issued an important weather alert for the coming days, revealing that large parts of the Kingdom will be affected by a cold, polar air mass. According to the report, the direct effects of this air mass will begin next Wednesday and Thursday, leading to noticeable changes and sharp fluctuations in weather conditions.

Affected areas and low temperatures

Weather maps and forecasts issued by the center indicate that the cold wave will affect multiple regions, starting in the northern areas such as Al-Jawf and the Northern Borders , passing through the Hail , and extending to the Qassim , reaching the capital Riyadh . Forecasts indicate that this wave will push temperatures to very low levels, with minimum temperatures expected to range between 3 degrees Celsius and -1 degree Celsius, foreshadowing extremely cold weather, especially in open and desert areas.

The climatic context and nature of winter in the Kingdom

This cold wave is part of Saudi Arabia's typical winter climate, as the country is usually affected during this time of year by cold air masses coming from the north and northeast. The northern regions (Al-Jawf and the Northern Borders) are the first to receive these air masses, making them the most susceptible to record low temperatures, before the cold gradually moves towards the central regions such as Al-Qassim and Riyadh. These waves often coincide with active surface winds, which can increase the feeling of cold and sometimes stir up dust and sand.

Important warnings and preventive measures

The National Center of Meteorology stressed the need for caution among citizens and residents in all affected areas. The center urged taking necessary precautions against colds and the potential effects of frost, particularly during the late night and early morning hours when temperatures are at their lowest. General recommendations for such weather conditions include:

  • Wearing heavy winter clothing, especially for children and the elderly.
  • Ensure the safety of heating appliances and provide adequate ventilation when using coal or kerosene heaters to avoid suffocation.
  • Exercise caution when driving on highways and open roads in case of reduced horizontal visibility due to dust or fog associated with the wave.
  • Protecting crops and livestock in rural areas from frost waves that may harm agricultural and animal production.

The official body called on everyone to follow climate reports and real-time updates to alerts issued through its official channels and digital platforms, to ensure access to accurate information about weather developments as they happen, and to avoid weather-related rumors that may spread through social media.
