
At the Security Council, Grossi warned of the danger of targeting peaceful nuclear facilities
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, confirmed that radiation levels at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Emirates remain normal. He also warned of the dangers of targeting peaceful nuclear facilities, given the potential for widespread radiological consequences, and called for maximum restraint.
This came during an emergency meeting Security Council , convened at the request of the Kingdom of Bahrain, to discuss the drone attack that targeted the vicinity of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE. The attack resulted in a fire in a generator within the plant's perimeter, but no injuries or radioactive leaks were reported.
Violation of international law
During the session, the UAE stressed that the attack constituted a dangerous escalation and a violation of international law, affirming its right to protect its territory and population.
Bahrain called for a firm international stance to halt attacks targeting civilian and vital infrastructure in the region.
Several countries, including the United States, Russia, China, and Pakistan, condemned the targeting of peaceful nuclear facilities, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilian infrastructure and calling for de-escalation and dialogue to prevent further escalation in the region.
