Civil Aviation: Ban on shipping "power banks" on board aircraft

Issued General Authority of Civil Aviation A new circular to all airlines, ground handling providers, airport operators, aircraft maintenance companies, freight forwarders, and companies operating in the field Air freight At the Kingdom’s airports, regarding updating the technical instructions for the safe transport of dangerous goods by air, in accordance with Update No. “1” of the international document “ICAO Doc 9284” issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization.
The authority explained that the circular obliges the concerned parties to immediately comply with the new updates and include them in the relevant operational manuals, in addition to updating safety procedures and awareness announcements provided to passengers on board flights.

Maximum charger capacity

Among the most prominent new instructions is a ban on recharging portable chargers (power banks) while on board aircraft. The maximum number of power banks allowed per passenger is limited to two, and the use of these chargers to charge portable electronic devices during flights is discouraged. This measure aims to enhance air safety requirements and prevent potential risks associated with lithium batteries.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) emphasized that all airlines operating at the Kingdom's airports, including the private aviation sector, are required to fully comply with its circulars and regulations to ensure the highest levels of operational safety and protect passengers and crew.
This update is part of GACA's ongoing efforts to align national regulations with approved international standards and strengthen the safety and sustainability framework within the Kingdom's civil aviation sector.
