Today's weather in Saudi Arabia: Thunderstorms and strong winds
Weather updates in Saudi Arabia today
The National Center for Meteorology issued its daily weather for Wednesday, forecasting continued unstable weather conditions across large parts of the Kingdom. The report indicates moderate to heavy thunderstorms, which could lead to flash flooding in valleys and ravines. These storms will be accompanied by hail and strong winds, causing dust storms and reducing visibility to near or zero.
These warnings cover parts of the Eastern Province, the Northern Borders region, Al-Jawf, Tabuk, Hail, Al-Qassim, Riyadh, Madinah, Makkah, Al-Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Najran. The center also warned of the possibility of dense fog in parts of the highlands in these areas, while the chance of snowfall remains in parts of the Tabuk region's highlands, creating an exceptionally wintry atmosphere in the region.
Navigation conditions in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf
Regarding maritime navigation, the report indicated that surface winds over the Red Sea will be northwesterly to westerly in the northern part, and southeasterly to southerly in the central and southern parts. Wind speeds will range from 27 to 50 km/h, potentially exceeding 60 km/h with the formation of thunderstorms and rain. Wave heights will range from 1.5 to 2.5 meters, resulting in moderate to rough sea conditions.
In the Arabian Gulf, forecasts indicate southeasterly to southerly surface winds with speeds ranging from 20 to 41 km/h, reaching over 55 km/h with thunderstorms. Wave height will be between one and two meters, potentially exceeding two and a half meters, resulting in a slight to moderate sea state, occasionally becoming rough.
Special alert for the Eastern Province
The National Center for Meteorology issued a special warning for the Eastern Province, cautioning of moderate to heavy rainfall starting at 9:00 AM and continuing until 7:00 PM. This warning covers the governorates of Hafr Al-Batin, Al-Khafji, Al-Nairiyah, and Qaryat Al-Ulya. The weather system will be accompanied by strong winds, near-zero visibility, hail, thunderstorms, and flash flooding.
Climate context and the importance of early warnings
These weather changes occur within the context of transitional periods in the Arabian Peninsula, where cold and warm air masses intersect, creating atmospheric instability. Historically, these seasonal rains have been a vital part of Saudi Arabia's climate, contributing to groundwater replenishment and the revitalization of vegetation in desert regions. The National Center of Meteorology plays a pivotal role in protecting lives and property through its early warning system, aligning with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to enhance quality of life and improve environmental safety.
Expected effects and precautionary measures
Locally, these weather conditions directly impact traffic in major cities and on highways, requiring drivers to exercise extreme caution. The General Directorate of Civil Defense typically raises its level of preparedness to respond to any emergencies resulting from flash floods in valleys. Economically, these rains have a significant positive impact on the agricultural sector, particularly in regions like Qassim and Al-Jawf, where they boost winter crop yields. Conversely, the rough sea conditions necessitate that fishermen and shipping companies suspend or postpone their activities to ensure maritime safety.
