Specialized medical rehabilitation centers affiliated with the Ministry recorded approximately 2,859 post-amputation visits during 2024. This data comes as part of efforts to raise public awareness of the main causes of amputation, primarily diabetes and accidents, which necessitates a serious focus on strengthening preventative measures.
Male dominance and its connection to lifestyle
Official data revealed a clear demographic disparity among patients, with males dominating, registering approximately 1,917 cases and accounting for over 67% of total visits. Public health experts suggest this disparity among males may be closely linked to their lifestyles, the nature of their professions, and their higher rates of traffic accidents and workplace injuries compared to females, placing them at greater risk.
Diabetes: The Silent Enemy of the Extremities
Diabetes topped the list of leading causes of these complex and life-changing surgeries, accounting for 1,215 cases . This figure serves as a stark warning, reflecting the severity of complications from this chronic disease, particularly diabetic foot.
