The third millet festival kicks off in Bariq under the patronage of the Prince of Asir

His Royal Highness Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz, Governor of the Asir Region, will inaugurate the third annual Millet Festival tomorrow in Bariq Governorate, located approximately 120 kilometers north of Abha. This important agricultural event is being held under the direct supervision of the Asir branch of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture and organized by the Bariq Agricultural Cooperative Society. It features broad participation from government agencies and the private sector, reflecting a collaborative effort to support the agricultural sector in the region.

Enhancing food security and the local economy

The Millet Festival holds strategic importance that transcends its role as a mere marketing event, aligning with the Kingdom's Vision 2030 objectives of achieving food security and supporting local content. The festival primarily aims to highlight the economic potential of local crops, empower farmers by establishing direct sales channels that guarantee them profitable returns, and support productive families involved in millet-based processing industries. This contributes to strengthening agricultural value chains and stimulating commercial activity in the region.

Millet: Agricultural Heritage and Nutritional Value

Millet is a strategic and historical crop in the Bariq Governorate and the wider Tihama Asir region, due to its excellent suitability to the area's climatic and environmental conditions and its ability to withstand water scarcity, making it an ideal choice for sustainable agriculture. Millet is distinguished by its high nutritional value and its content of essential minerals and vitamins, making it a staple in the traditional diet of the south. Through these festivals, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture seeks to revitalize this promising national product and develop its cultivation and marketing methods to make it a sustainable economic contributor.

Diverse activities and agricultural tourism

The Palm Walkway in Bariq Governorate is set to host the festival's events, opening its doors to visitors daily during the evening. The festival will feature various sections showcasing the finest millet varieties and their derivatives, including baked goods and traditional dishes. In addition, informational and educational booths will be provided by relevant authorities to raise awareness about the importance of agricultural investment. The festival is expected to attract a large number of those interested in culinary heritage and tourists, contributing to the growth of agritourism, a rising tourism sector in the Asir region. It will also offer visitors a unique opportunity to experience the region's culture and authentic folk heritage firsthand.
