Saudi Arabia celebrates International Mountain Day with diverse environmental events

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia joined the international community in celebrating International Mountain Day , observed annually on December 11, through a wide range of events and field initiatives organized by the National Center for Vegetation Development and Combating Desertification . This step underscores the Kingdom's commitment to protecting its unique ecosystems and highlights its stunning mountainous terrain, which forms an integral part of the country's geographical and cultural identity.

Global context and national interest

International Mountain Day is a UN event established by the General Assembly in 2003 to highlight the importance of mountains in providing fresh water, clean energy, and food, as well as their vital role in supporting biodiversity. Locally, this occasion takes on added significance in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the "Green Saudi Arabia" initiative, which prioritize the protection of the natural environment and the restoration of vegetation cover, particularly in mountainous regions that represent the Kingdom's lungs and its strategic reserve of biodiversity.

Volunteer initiatives roam the regions

In line with these objectives, the center launched several volunteer opportunities that witnessed widespread participation from citizens across the Kingdom. In the Makkah region , efforts focused on Wadi Makhadah in Taif Governorate and Jabal al-Qamar in Khulais Governorate, where volunteers participated in clean-up, tree-planting, and awareness campaigns. These efforts extended to the Al-Baha region , targeting Shada al-Asfal in Qalwa Governorate and the Al-Ghouqa forest in Bani Kabir, Baljurashi. The Jazan region intensive activity in Al-Raith Governorate, coinciding with similar events in the Madinah region, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the environmental movement in the Kingdom.

Ecotourism and unique experiences

The activities weren't limited to volunteer work; they also included promoting the concept of ecotourism and adventure. In the Najran region , participants enjoyed an exceptional mountaineering experience in Wadi Maghid, allowing them to explore the area's unique geological formations. Similarly, the center organized an introductory visit for its members to the village of Ghamra in Thadiq Governorate, Riyadh region , to deepen their understanding of mountain systems and their role in the sustainability of natural resources.

Protecting biodiversity and future projects

The mountains of the Kingdom, particularly the Sarawat Mountains, are distinguished by their rare and endemic plant species, which play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. In this context, the National Center for Vegetation Development continues to implement ambitious strategic projects, including forest rehabilitation projects in Asir, Al-Baha, Najran, and Madinah, as well as the National Forest Survey Project and projects to combat invasive and parasitic plants, to ensure the sustainability of these resources for future generations.
