Aramco and Solutions by stc partnership: A supercomputer for the energy sector
Strategic partnership to drive digital transformation in the energy sector
Saudi Aramco, the world’s leading integrated energy and chemicals company, announced a strategic collaboration with stc solutions, a leader in enabling digital transformation in the Kingdom and the region. This collaboration aims to develop a new generation of high-performance supercomputers, representing the largest upgrade to Aramco’s computing infrastructure in its history and underscoring its ongoing commitment to adopting cutting-edge technologies to enhance its upstream operations.
General context: In line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030
This ambitious project comes within the framework of Saudi Arabia’s comprehensive national transformation under Vision 2030, which places digital transformation and technology localization at the heart of its objectives. Saudi Aramco has long been a pioneer in using advanced technology to maintain its position as the world’s largest energy supplier. This investment in supercomputing reflects a deep understanding that the future of the energy industry increasingly depends on the ability to analyze massive amounts of data with exceptional accuracy and speed to make critical strategic decisions.
The importance of supercomputing in energy exploration
The project aims to enhance Saudi Aramco’s computing capabilities in the exploration and production sector to an unprecedented level, a crucial factor in discovering and extracting hydrocarbon resources. The new supercomputer will enable the company to process advanced seismic data, model reservoirs, and conduct simulations on a massive scale with unparalleled accuracy. Designed to handle enormous amounts of data, this cutting-edge system is expected to have seven times the computing capacity of its current capabilities, revolutionizing the speed and accuracy of exploration operations.
Expected local, regional, and international impact
Domestically, this collaboration strengthens the Kingdom’s digital ecosystem and highlights the capabilities of national companies like stc solutions to execute world-class technology projects. Regionally, it solidifies Saudi Arabia’s position as a hub for technological innovation in the Middle East. Internationally, the project will contribute to enhancing global energy security by enabling Aramco to increase extraction rates from existing fields, discover new reserves more efficiently, and extend the lifespan of its producing fields, thus reinforcing its role as a reliable energy supplier to the world.
Official statements confirm the importance of the project
Commenting on this, Saudi Aramco’s Executive Vice President of Upstream Business, Abdulhameed Al-Dughaither, said: “At Saudi Aramco, digital transformation is redefining the limits of potential in hydrocarbon exploration and reservoir management. Through this advanced supercomputer, we seek to set a new standard in computing excellence and reaffirm our commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to enhance performance by discovering new reserves and improving recovery rates.”.
For his part, the CEO of solutions by stc, Eng. Omar Al-Nuaimi, said: “This collaboration represents a strategic step towards empowering the energy sector by leveraging the latest high-performance computing capabilities. Through this partnership, solutions by stc will continue to enhance its role in developing advanced digital infrastructure that supports achieving the goals of digital transformation and increasing the operational value of the energy sector in the Kingdom.”.
Project details and scope
The project, costing SAR 1.4 billion (USD 372.5 million), is specifically designed to support seismic data interpretation and reservoir modeling. System delivery is scheduled to begin in early 2027, with stc providing integrated solutions encompassing development, system and software provision, and technical support. This reflects the depth of collaboration between the two companies to meet the growing global demand for energy.
