Eastern Province Prisons and the Writers' Association sign an agreement to rehabilitate inmates
Strategic partnership to enhance rehabilitation and reform
Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Saud bin Talal bin Badr, Governor of Al-Ahsa, the Governorate headquarters witnessed the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement between the General Directorate of Prisons in the Eastern Province and the “Adabaa” Association. This unique partnership aims to discover and develop the literary talents of prison inmates, thereby contributing to the enhancement of rehabilitation and reform programs and enabling their positive reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
The signing ceremony was attended by the Director of Prisons in the Eastern Province, Brigadier General Fayez Mubarak bin Musma’, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Writers Association, Dr. Mahmoud bin Saud Al Ibn Zaid, along with a number of officials from both sides, reflecting the importance that both parties attach to this humanitarian and cultural initiative.
General context: The shift towards reform and human development
This agreement comes within the context of the comprehensive transformation underway in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia across various sectors, including the prison and rehabilitation sector. Under the Kingdom's Vision 2030, correctional facilities are no longer merely places for carrying out sentences, but rather environments for rehabilitation and reform aimed at rebuilding individuals and equipping them with the skills necessary to become active members of society. The Vision emphasizes the importance of quality of life and human development, which aligns perfectly with the idea of investing inmates' time in meaningful creative and cultural activities, instead of leaving them idle.
The Ministry of Culture supports such initiatives that make literature and the arts effective tools for social change, as writing and literary expression can be a means of psychological release, self-reflection, and opening new horizons for positive thinking.
The importance of the agreement and its expected impact
The significance of this partnership lies in its role as a model for integration between the security and non-profit sectors to achieve shared community goals. Locally, the agreement will provide inmates in Eastern Province prisons with a unique opportunity to hone their writing skills through specialized workshops and training programs led by a select group of writers and specialists from the "Adabaa" Association. This is expected to boost the inmates' self-confidence and instill in them a sense of self-worth and accomplishment.
At the national level, this initiative represents an inspiring step that can be replicated across the Kingdom, making cultural and literary rehabilitation programs an integral part of the aftercare system for inmates. It also enhances the humanitarian image of correctional institutions and highlights the efforts being made to transform them into beacons of reform and development.
His Highness the Governor of Al-Ahsa affirmed that rehabilitating inmates and empowering them with skills represents a real investment in human development, praising this partnership which is an example of integration between government agencies and the non-profit sector, and stressing that Al-Ahsa Governorate adopts a comprehensive approach to development that is consistent with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which the wise leadership - may God protect it - has given all support and attention to.
