The Makkah Route Initiative in Indonesia: A convenient Hajj journey from Jakarta to Makkah

A pilgrimage journey that begins before takeoff

The Hajj pilgrimage no longer begins the moment pilgrims land at Saudi Arabian airports; it now originates in airports thousands of kilometers away in the Far East. In Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim-majority country, the "Makkah Route Initiative" has established a new concept for serving pilgrims, transforming their spiritual journey into a more convenient and comfortable experience from the very first moment.

Background and objectives of the initiative within Vision 2030

The “Makkah Route Initiative” was first launched in 2017 and is one of the key initiatives of the Ministry of Interior within the “Guests of God Service Program”, which represents a fundamental pillar in Saudi Vision 2030. The initiative aims to improve the quality of services provided to pilgrims and Umrah performers by completing their entry procedures into the Kingdom from the airports of their countries, which greatly reduces waiting time upon arrival and alleviates the hardship of travel.

Indonesia was one of the first countries to embrace this initiative, which was launched from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, forming a successful model to be emulated in managing Hajj trips with high efficiency, and as an embodiment of the strong relations between the two countries.

Continued expansion and success in Indonesia

The initiative's success wasn't limited to the capital, Jakarta. With increasing demand and positive results, the service expanded to other major airports in the Indonesian archipelago. Subsequently, it was launched at Solo and Surabaya airports, serving a wider range of pilgrims in different regions. Most recently, the initiative continued its expansion, reaching Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar, underscoring the growing demand and the desire to generalize this unique experience.

The procedures carried out in the initiative's halls in Indonesia include the following:

  • Issuing and verifying Hajj visas electronically.
  • Biometric data recording (fingerprints and facial image).
  • Complete the Saudi passport procedures in advance.
  • Checking that the necessary health requirements are met.
  • Labeling and sorting luggage, and sending it directly to the pilgrims’ accommodations in Mecca and Medina.

Local and international importance and impact

On the local level in Indonesia, the initiative has had a tremendous positive impact, as Indonesian pilgrims, especially the elderly, feel unparalleled comfort upon arrival at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah or Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, as they move directly from the plane to the designated transport buses without having to stand in passport queues or wait for luggage.

On the international stage, the Makkah Route Initiative has become a landmark in Saudi Hajj diplomacy, having been successfully implemented in other countries such as Pakistan, Malaysia, Morocco, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Côte d'Ivoire. This global expansion reflects the Kingdom's commitment to leveraging technology and international cooperation to provide exceptional service to pilgrims and solidify its position as a leader in the Muslim world in organizing this great pillar of Islam.
