18 migrants die in boat sinking in the Aegean Sea off the Turkish coast

18 migrants on board were killed A rubber boat caused their deaths by drowningWednesday, in Aegean Sea Off the coast of Bodrum in southwestern Türkiye, the Turkish coast guard announced.
A statement from the coast guard said, “Following search and rescue operations, 21 irregular migrants were rescued alive, while the bodies of 18 others were recovered.”.
The coast guard explained that it spotted the group of migrants at sea around 6:00 AM (03:00 GMT), noting that “the rubber boat refused to stop and sped away” before water leaked into it and it sank.

High demand

The popular tourist city of Bodrum is located near several Greek islands, including Kos, one of the entry points to the European Union in the Aegean Sea.
Kos is less than five kilometers from Turkey.

Drowning incidents

Drownings are frequent during these perilous journeys to the Greek islands.
At least 831 migrants have gone missing or been found dead in the Mediterranean Sea since the beginning of the year, according to the International Organization for Migration.
