SDAIA enhances the Hajj journey through the Makkah Route Initiative in Türkiye
Enhancing the Hajj pilgrimage with artificial intelligence technologies
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia continues its pioneering efforts in serving pilgrims, with the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) playing a pivotal role in enhancing the digital transformation of the Makkah Route Initiative, specifically at the initiative's terminal in Istanbul International Airport in Turkey. Through an integrated technological system, SDAIA is working to facilitate a smoother and more convenient journey for Turkish pilgrims by integrating data and expediting procedures before their departure from their country.
The Makkah Route Initiative: Historical Background and Strategic Context
The Makkah Route Initiative is a pioneering initiative of the Ministry of Interior within the Guests of God Service Program, one of the key programs of Saudi Vision 2030. Launched in 2017 (1438 AH), the initiative aims to streamline entry procedures for pilgrims arriving in the Kingdom from their home airports. This includes issuing e-visas, verifying health requirements, registering and collecting biometric data, and tagging and sorting luggage. This proactive approach allows pilgrims to proceed directly to their accommodations in Makkah and Madinah upon arrival, eliminating the need to wait in passport control or baggage claim lines at the airport, thus reducing long waiting times to just a few minutes.
The technical role of “SDAIA” and its impact on the efficiency of procedures
The role of SDAIA lies in developing and operating the technological systems that connect all government entities participating in the initiative within a unified and secure digital environment. These procedures include the accurate verification of pilgrims' data, the collection of their biometrics, and the electronic issuance of Hajj permits. This technological integration not only ensures the accuracy of information and the smooth flow of procedures but also supports immediate decision-making, thus enhancing operational efficiency and significantly reducing waiting times. This integration also extends to innovative smart services, such as baggage tagging and electronically linking it to the pilgrim's accommodation, enabling its direct transfer to its final destination without any intervention from the pilgrim upon arrival.
The local and international importance and impact of the initiative
Domestically, the Makkah Route Initiative reflects the Kingdom's progress in digital transformation and its use of cutting-edge technologies to serve pilgrims, aligning with the goals of Vision 2030. Internationally, the initiative enhances the Kingdom's reputation as a leader in crowd management and providing exceptional services to pilgrims, while also strengthening cooperative relationships with countries benefiting from the initiative. The success of this model in countries such as Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Morocco, Bangladesh, and Côte d'Ivoire serves as a global model that can be leveraged for managing major events. It is worth noting that the Ministry of Interior is implementing the initiative this year in collaboration with the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Hajj and Umrah, and Media, as well as the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, the Saudi Data & Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the Guests of God Service Program, and the General Directorate of Passports, embodying a comprehensive national effort to serve the pilgrims.
