The Hadhramaut Council supports Saudi Arabia and rejects the military escalation in Al-Mahra

The Hadhramaut National Council announced its full and unequivocal support for the statement issued by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which addressed the recent developments and the latest events on the ground in the Hadhramaut and Al-Mahra governorates. The Council affirmed that this Saudi position reflects a keen strategic vision and a strong commitment to sparing the liberated areas, particularly the eastern governorates, the ravages of peripheral conflicts that only serve the enemies of stability.

In an official statement published by the Yemeni News Agency (SABA), the council described the Saudi statement as a "responsible stance" aimed primarily at protecting social peace and the interests of citizens, and preventing any attempts to drag the region into a cycle of violence through uncoordinated military actions. The council commended the significant efforts exerted by the Kingdom, in continuous coordination with the United Arab Emirates, to contain the situation and restore order in a way that ensures respect for state institutions and the powers of local authorities.

Context of events and strategic importance

These developments come at a sensitive time for the Yemeni situation, as the governorates of Hadramawt and Al-Mahra hold significant strategic and economic weight within Yemen. Hadramawt, the largest governorate in Yemen by area and rich in oil and mineral resources, represents a vital economic lifeline for the country. The past period has witnessed intense political activity culminating in the formation of the "Hadramawt National Council" in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, as a political body representing the aspirations of the governorate's residents to manage their own affairs independently from the political and military conflicts plaguing other regions.

The Saudi position gains significance from its role as the primary guarantor of the Riyadh Agreement and the overseer of the cohesion of the Presidential Leadership Council. Political circles view any unilateral military escalation in these sensitive areas—adjacent to the Saudi and Omani borders—as a direct threat to regional security, not just to Yemeni domestic affairs, thus necessitating decisive intervention to impose de-escalation and a return to the political process.

Rejection of militarization outside state institutions

The Hadramawt Council stressed in its statement the necessity of the withdrawal of forces not under the control of the local authority from the two governorates, and the handover of military camps according to organized security and military arrangements under the direct supervision of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy. The Council clarified that any military movements carried out outside of institutional and consensual frameworks constitute a serious violation of the national consensus and an additional factor complicating the political and security landscape, which necessitates a firm stance against them and a wise approach to addressing them.

The Council concluded its statement by affirming its support for regional and international efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and just political solution in Yemen, noting that addressing the root causes of national issues must be done through dialogue and constructive political action, leading to lasting stability and comprehensive peace that ends the suffering of the Yemeni people.
