Red alert in the Eastern Province: Heavy rains and floods hit 10 governorates

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued an urgent warning, raising the alert level to "red alert" in the Eastern Province, as part of its close monitoring of severe weather fluctuations affecting the Kingdom. This precautionary measure comes in response to weather monitoring indicators predicting heavy rainfall accompanied by natural phenomena that could pose a risk to public safety and property in a large number of provinces.

Rainfall map and timings

Technical reports issued by the center indicated that the weather conditions would persist for approximately 21 consecutive hours, beginning in the early hours of Thursday morning and extending until dawn on Friday. The region is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, leading to flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, as well as hail. This will be accompanied by strong winds stirring up dust and sand, reducing horizontal visibility, and a noticeable rise in the waves of the Arabian Gulf.

The timeline for the impact of the situation on the governorates is as follows:

  • Northern governorates (Al-Khafji, Al-Nairiyah, Qaryat Al-Ulya): The situation will begin from 5:00 AM until 4:00 PM, and will be characterized by strong winds and heavy rainfall.
  • Dammam metropolitan area and coastal areas (Jubail, Khobar, Dammam, Qatif, Ras Tanura): The peak of the weather event will occur from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM, with a high probability of thunderstorms and sea disturbances.
  • Al-Ahsa and Abqaiq: They are experiencing similar weather conditions, including zero visibility and flash floods during the morning and evening periods of Thursday.
  • Border areas and many others: The warning extends for a longer period, starting from 10:00 AM on Thursday and continuing until 1:00 AM on Friday.

The strategic importance of the region and the impact of the weather

Weather warnings in the Eastern Province are of exceptional importance due to the region's economic and geographical significance. It serves as the industrial heartland of the Kingdom, housing major oil and gas facilities, as well as vital ports on the Arabian Gulf. Severe weather fluctuations, such as high waves and strong winds, typically disrupt maritime navigation and logistical operations, necessitating close coordination among relevant authorities to ensure the safe and uninterrupted continuation of operations.

Red alert indicators and national readiness

The automated early warning system implemented by the National Center of Meteorology is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia's crisis and natural disaster management system. The color "red" in this protocol signifies a "severe" weather condition requiring the utmost caution. This system reflects the technological advancements the Kingdom has witnessed in meteorological monitoring in recent years, contributing to reduced risks and enhanced responsiveness from government and service agencies in dealing with emergencies.

Civil Defense and Public Safety Recommendations

In light of these developments, the General Directorate of Civil Defense stressed the importance of citizens and residents adhering to safety guidelines. It urged everyone to stay away from flood channels, valleys, and low-lying areas where water may suddenly accumulate. The Directorate also warned of the dangers of attempting to cross flooded areas, regardless of the water level, and emphasized the need to stay updated through official channels and trusted social media platforms to ensure everyone's safety and avoid spreading rumors.
