The Makkah Route Initiative in Istanbul: Facilitating the Hajj Journey for the Guests of God

Comprehensive services for pilgrims at Istanbul Airport

Qualified and specialized Saudi personnel continue to provide their high-quality services at Istanbul International Airport in the Republic of Turkey, within the “Makkah Route Initiative,” which is one of the leading initiatives of the Saudi Ministry of Interior within the Guests of God Service Program, one of the programs of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. The initiative aims to provide an integrated model of field services that facilitate the journey of the guests of God from the moment they leave their countries until they arrive at their accommodations in Makkah and Madinah.

The Saudi teams, comprised of specialists in passports, technology, and logistics, work seamlessly to expedite pilgrims' procedures in their departure countries, ensuring a smooth journey and significantly reducing time and effort upon arrival at Saudi airports. Several pilgrims who benefited from this service expressed their deep satisfaction and happiness with the speed and ease of the procedures, emphasizing that these high-quality services alleviated the hardships of travel and allowed them to focus on performing their rituals with complete peace of mind.

Background of the initiative and its strategic objectives

The Makkah Route Initiative was launched as a pilot program in 2017 before being expanded in subsequent years to include several countries. This initiative represents a significant leap forward in Hajj services, shifting the point of entry procedures into the Kingdom from arrival airports to departure airports in participating countries. These procedures include issuing visas electronically, collecting biometric data (fingerprints), completing passport control, verifying health requirements, and tagging and sorting luggage according to transportation and accommodation arrangements within the Kingdom. Upon arrival at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah or Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, pilgrims are transferred directly to dedicated buses that transport them to their accommodations, while their luggage is delivered to them by the relevant authorities.

Local and international importance and impact

At the local level, the initiative reflects the Saudi leadership's commitment to harnessing all available technological and human resources to serve pilgrims and radically enhance their religious experience. Internationally, it showcases the Kingdom's civilized image and its exceptional ability to efficiently and effectively manage and organize the world's largest human gatherings. Furthermore, this initiative strengthens bilateral cooperation between the Kingdom and the countries where it is implemented, requiring high-level coordination among various government entities in both countries. The success of the "Makkah Route" in countries such as Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, Bangladesh, and Côte d'Ivoire is a testament to the success of Saudi diplomacy and reinforces the Kingdom's position as a leader of the Islamic world, dedicated to the comfort and safety of pilgrims.
