Saudi Arabia condemns drone attacks on Kuwait originating from Iraq
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's strong condemnation of the attack targeting two border posts in northern Kuwait, which was carried out using drones launched from Iraqi territory. This firm Saudi stance stems from the shared Gulf solidarity and the rejection of any threat to the security and stability of the region's countries.
In its official statement, the Kingdom emphasized its categorical rejection of any violation of state sovereignty and any attempt to threaten the region's security and stability. It reiterated its full support for and solidarity with the State of Kuwait, its government and people, and its backing for all measures taken to preserve its sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity. The Kingdom also held the Iraqi government responsible for dealing firmly with these threats emanating from its territory and targeting the security of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.
A tense regional context and the growing threat of drones
This incident comes amid a complex regional context marked by escalating tensions and the use of drones as a primary weapon by armed groups and militias operating outside state control. In recent years, the region, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, has witnessed similar attacks targeting vital facilities and civilian infrastructure, highlighting the significant security challenge posed by these low-cost and easily deployable military technologies. The fact that the drones originated from Iraq raises serious concerns about the Iraqi government's ability to fully control its territory and prevent its use as a launchpad for attacks against neighboring countries.
The significance of the incident and its impact on regional relations
This attack is particularly significant as it represents a true test of relations between Iraq and its Gulf neighbors, relations that have seen marked improvement in recent years. The recurrence of such incidents could erode the hard-won trust and place additional pressure on the government in Baghdad to demonstrate its commitment to curbing armed factions. Domestically, the incident reinforces Kuwait's security alert and underscores the need to strengthen its air defense systems. Regionally, it deepens solidarity among the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states in the face of shared threats and reaffirms that the security of any Gulf state is an integral part of the security of the entire GCC. These developments are expected to drive greater security and military coordination among the GCC states to counter the cross-border threat of drones.
