Poultry production in Saudi Arabia: 76% self-sufficiency and stable prices
A national achievement in the food security sector
In a move reflecting the success of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's strategic plans, Engineer Mansour Al-Mashiti, Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, affirmed the significant stability of the poultry sector's supply chains. This stability has directly contributed to abundant production and meeting increasing domestic demand, ensuring the availability of high-quality poultry meat and products at stable prices for consumers in all local markets.
General context and historical transformation within Vision 2030
Historically, the Kingdom relied heavily on imported poultry to meet domestic consumption. However, with the launch of Saudi Vision 2030, achieving food security has become a cornerstone for ensuring the sustainability of the national economy. Thanks to government support and financing initiatives, the poultry sector has achieved remarkable progress and record-breaking figures, with domestic production expected to exceed 1.5 million tons, achieving a self-sufficiency rate of over 76%. This transformation not only supports the national economy but also reduces its vulnerability to global market fluctuations and protects the local market from inflation.
Record numbers in poultry and table egg production
In terms of figures, Al-Mashiti explained that the production of large-weight chickens (weighing over 1,500 grams) approached 77,000 tons. Four major companies began actual production of these weights at the beginning of this month, which will enhance their availability in all retail outlets and markets. Regarding table eggs, daily production is estimated at more than 24 million eggs, of which more than 10 million are produced by the top 10 producers in the Kingdom. Furthermore, stockpiles exceeded 26.6 million eggs during March, equivalent to approximately 74,000 cartons, reflecting the strength of the strategic reserve.
Preparing for the Hajj season and securing supply chains
These achievements gain added significance with the approach of the Hajj season, as consumption of poultry meat and its products doubles to meet the needs of pilgrims. These assurances were given during a joint meeting held at the Ministry headquarters, chaired by Al-Mashiti, with the participation of the General Authority for Food Security, the National Committee for Poultry Producers, and the National Committee for Feed Manufacturers of the Federation of Saudi Chambers of Commerce. The meeting reviewed the production and stock levels of broiler chickens for the first quarter, with monthly production in March reaching 125,470 tons and stocks at approximately 16,278 tons, reassuring consumers of price stability and ample supply during peak seasons.
Economic impact and support for local production
Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom is demonstrating its ability to manage food security with high efficiency despite climatic challenges. Domestically, the Ministry's plans have contributed to the establishment of model poultry projects in several regions, creating new job opportunities and supporting local content. Furthermore, initiatives aimed at supporting local feed producers have increased investment in this vital sector, ensuring sustainable production, reducing import costs, positively impacting the stability of final consumer prices, and reinforcing Saudi Arabia's position as an economic powerhouse capable of achieving self-sufficiency.
