Developing Al-Jamal Square in Jeddah: Traffic solutions to maintain safety

The Jeddah Governorate Municipality has begun implementing a package of development works and engineering improvements in "Camel Square" located in the southern Abhar area. This strategic step aims to raise the efficiency of traffic flow in one of the most vital arteries in the north of the governorate, and enhance safety rates for road users, in line with the objectives of the Quality of Life Program, one of the main pillars of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

Engineering solutions to resolve bottlenecks

The municipality explained in its statement that the project falls under the umbrella of the "Traffic Solutions Implementation Project to Address Congestion in Jeddah," where current work focuses on implementing well-considered engineering solutions and advanced operational arrangements. These improvements aim to reorganize intersections and clarify traffic flow to reduce dangerous traffic conflicts, ensuring smoother traffic movement on the surrounding road network, which includes King Abdulaziz Road, the Corniche Road, Prince Talal bin Mansour Road, and Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Road. These modifications are expected to reduce travel time and improve the commuting experience for both residents and visitors.

Preserving visual and historical identity

In balancing development with the preservation of the city's artistic heritage, the Jeddah Municipality affirmed its full commitment to maintaining the site's symbolic elements. The iconic "Camel Sculpture" will remain in its current location, considered an integral part of the area's memory and visual identity. This sculpture is one of the most prominent artistic landmarks for which Jeddah is renowned as a city of open-air sculptures. Erected in 1997 by the artist Rabie Al-Akhras, the artwork comprises two camels; the larger one stands 21 meters tall and weighs 10 tons, while the smaller one reaches 15 meters in height and weighs 7 tons, making it a distinctive feature of the urban landscape of the Abhur district.

The importance of the project to the Abhar region

This project is of particular importance given the strategic location of the southern Obhur area, a major tourist and entertainment destination in Jeddah, the Bride of the Red Sea, which is experiencing rapid population and urban growth. Improving traffic flow at Al-Jamal Square is a pressing necessity to accommodate the increasing traffic volume, especially during holidays and weekends, reflecting the commitment of the relevant authorities to developing infrastructure to keep pace with the city's urban expansion.

The Jeddah Municipality continues its tireless efforts to develop a number of high-priority sites within well-studied phased plans, based on practical and sustainable solutions that contribute to improving the urban landscape and raising the efficiency of the road network, in order to achieve a safe and smooth traffic environment that enhances the quality of life for the residents and visitors of the governorate.
