The first flights of the Makkah Route Initiative from Pakistan have arrived in Madinah

Introduction: The launch of the pilgrims' journeys

The first flight carrying pilgrims benefiting from the Makkah Route Initiative for this year arrived safely, by the grace of God, from Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The flight landed successfully at Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, thus inaugurating a new season of ease and comfort for pilgrims to the Holy House of God, and reaffirming the deep bilateral relations and joint cooperation between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

What is the Makkah Route Initiative?

The Makkah Route Initiative is one of the most prominent strategic initiatives launched by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as part of the Guests of God Service Program, which is one of the key programs of Saudi Vision 2030. This pioneering initiative aims to enhance the quality of services provided to pilgrims and facilitate their spiritual journey from the moment they depart their home countries until their arrival in the Holy Land. The initiative works to complete all pilgrim procedures at their home airports with ease and convenience, thus saving considerable time and effort.

The initiative's operational mechanism and streamlined procedures

The journey for beneficiaries of the initiative begins with the issuance of an electronic Hajj visa and the collection of their biometric data (fingerprints) in their home countries. Following this, pilgrims undergo passport and customs procedures at the departure airport, after a thorough verification of all necessary health requirements. A key feature of the initiative is the baggage coding and sorting process; pilgrims' luggage is labeled according to their transportation and accommodation arrangements within the Kingdom. Upon arrival at Saudi airports, pilgrims proceed directly via designated routes to buses that transport them to their accommodations in Mecca and Medina. Relevant authorities then deliver their luggage directly to their rooms, eliminating the need for waiting.

Historical background and scale of achievement

Since its launch in 1438 AH (2017 CE), the Makkah Route Initiative has achieved successive and remarkable successes. Now entering its eighth year, the initiative has set records in the number of beneficiaries. According to official statistics, since its inception, the initiative has successfully served more than 1,254,994 pilgrims from various participating Islamic countries, reflecting the significant institutional and organizational efforts undertaken by the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to serve Islam and Muslims.

Integration of national efforts (participating entities)

This exceptional success would not have been possible without the combined efforts of numerous government and private entities in the Kingdom. The Ministry of Interior is implementing this initiative in close cooperation and full integration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, the Ministry of Media, the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority, the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), the General Authority for Endowments, the Guests of God Service Program, and the General Directorate of Passports. This work is also being carried out in conjunction with the strategic digital partner (stc Group), ensuring a robust and reliable technological infrastructure.

Importance and expected impact

At the local level, this initiative enhances the Kingdom’s position as a global leader in crowd management and advanced logistics services, and confirms its commitment to achieving the goals of Vision 2030. At the regional and international levels, the initiative deepens fraternal ties with Islamic countries and presents a global model to be emulated in international cooperation to facilitate the movement of travelers across borders using the latest digital technologies, confirming that the comfort of the pilgrims remains at the top of the Saudi leadership’s priorities.
