Saudi Arabia weather today: Rain in Jazan, warning for the Eastern Province, and a cold wave

The Jazan region experienced severe weather fluctuations this evening, with heavy rainfall affecting Jazan city and several surrounding towns and governorates, leading to flash floods in some valleys and ravines. This rainfall is part of a series of weather disturbances currently impacting several regions of Saudi Arabia.

Weather alerts for the Eastern Province

In a related development, the National Center for Meteorology issued a yellow alert for the expected weather conditions in the Eastern Province. This alert covered a wide range of governorates, including Jubail, Khobar, Dammam, Qatif, Ras Tanura, Khafji, Nairyah, Qaryat Al-Ulya, as well as Al-Ahsa and Abqaiq. The center explained in its report that the region would experience strong surface winds, with speeds reaching between 40 and 49 kilometers per hour, causing dust storms, reduced horizontal visibility, and a significant increase in wave height along the coastal areas.

Saturday's weather forecast for the Kingdom

The National Center for Meteorology revealed details of the expected weather conditions for Saturday, indicating that the Kingdom will experience a noticeable drop in temperatures, accompanied by various weather phenomena including frost, fog, and dust in parts of 11 administrative regions. The center predicted that the Tabuk, Al-Jawf, and Northern Borders regions will be affected by cold air masses leading to frost formation, especially in the mountainous areas of the Tabuk region, with continued surface wind activity stirring up dust.

Geographical and climatic context

The Jazan region is characterized by its diverse geography, encompassing both coastlines and mountainous highlands. This makes it susceptible to atmospheric instability and heavy rainfall, even outside of the traditional rainy seasons, due to moist air currents originating from the Red Sea and colliding with the mountains. Conversely, the northern and eastern regions of the Kingdom are affected during winter by cold waves from the north, which often cause a sharp drop in temperatures, frost, and dense fog that reduces visibility.

Public safety recommendations

Due to these weather fluctuations, the relevant authorities, especially the Civil Defense, emphasize the need for caution. Citizens and residents of Jazan are advised to stay away from flood channels and valleys during rainfall. The Traffic Department also urges drivers in the Eastern and Northern regions to drive with extreme caution due to the possibility of reduced visibility caused by dust or fog, and to adhere to speed limits to ensure everyone's safety.
