Saudi Arabia is the largest tourism economy in the Middle East | WTTC Report

A recent report by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has confirmed Saudi Arabia's leading position in the tourism sector, ranking it as the largest tourism economy in the Middle East. This achievement is a culmination of the sector's sustained efforts and strong performance, which has become a cornerstone of the Kingdom's economic diversification strategy.

A key pillar of Vision 2030

This leadership was not a coincidence, but rather a direct result of the ambitious plans stemming from Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to reduce dependence on oil and build a diversified and sustainable economy. Since the launch of the Vision, the tourism sector has been a top priority and has undergone radical transformations, most notably the launch of the electronic tourist visa system in 2019. This system has opened the Kingdom's doors to visitors from around the world to explore its cultural, historical, and natural treasures, thus transcending its traditional image as a destination solely for religious tourism.

Unprecedented growth and economic impact

According to the Council’s 2025 Economic Impact Report, the total contribution of the travel and tourism sector to the Kingdom’s economy is expected to reach approximately $178 billion, equivalent to 46% of the total tourism economy in the entire Middle East region. The report also highlights the exceptional growth rate, with the sector’s contribution to GDP projected to grow by 7.4%, more than double the global average of 4.1% and significantly exceeding the Middle East average of 5.3%. These figures not only reinforce the Kingdom’s position as the largest tourism market but also make it the fastest-growing in the region.

Major projects are driving the future

This rapid growth is due to the massive investments the Kingdom is making in mega tourism projects that have transformed the global tourism landscape. Projects such as NEOM with its futuristic cities like The Line, the luxurious Red Sea resorts in the Red Sea and Amaala destinations, the Diriyah Gate project that revives history, the Qiddiya entertainment city, and Al-Ula with its stunning natural landscapes and rich cultural heritage, are all key drivers for attracting tourists and international investments, offering unique and diverse tourism experiences.

Local and regional influences

The Kingdom’s rise as a tourism powerhouse has profound implications that extend far beyond economic figures. Domestically, the sector contributes to creating hundreds of thousands of jobs for young Saudis, empowering women, and supporting local entrepreneurs. Regionally and internationally, this success sets a new benchmark for competitiveness in the region and reshapes the image of the Kingdom as an open and welcoming global destination, capable of hosting major international events and attracting visitors from all cultures.
