Saudi-Syrian cooperation in transportation to enhance regional connectivity and trade
In a move reflecting the growing development of bilateral relations, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia hosted a delegation from the Syrian Ministry of Transport to discuss ways to enhance joint cooperation in the fields of transport, roads, and infrastructure. This visit comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to rebuild bridges of communication and activate strategic partnerships that serve the interests of both countries and their brotherly peoples.
The Syrian delegation visited the Saudi Center for Road Research and Curved Pavement Testing, where they were briefed on the center's latest research and applied studies in the field of road and transportation engineering. The two sides discussed ways to exchange expertise and coordinate on future projects, supporting sustainable development plans and contributing to the development of infrastructure and logistics services in both countries.
Historical context and the return of diplomatic relations
These talks are particularly significant as they come after a period of hiatus and represent a tangible outcome of the restoration of full diplomatic relations between Riyadh and Damascus. In May 2023, the Arab Summit hosted by Jeddah witnessed Syria's official return to its seat in the Arab League, a historic step spearheaded by the Kingdom, which played a pivotal role in creating the conditions for turning the page on the past and opening a new chapter of joint Arab cooperation. The land routes connecting the Kingdom to Syria, via Jordan, have long served as a vital trade artery for the movement of goods and passengers between the Arabian Gulf region, the Levant, and Europe, before being impacted by the events that unfolded in the region over the past decade.
Strategic importance and expected impact
Domestically, this cooperation represents a vital opportunity for Syria to contribute to reconstruction efforts and benefit from Saudi Arabia’s advanced expertise in modern infrastructure and road technologies. For the Kingdom, this aligns with the objectives of Vision 2030 and the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which aim to solidify Saudi Arabia’s position as a global logistics hub connecting three continents. Reactivating land trade routes through Syria directly advances this goal.
Regionally, reviving and developing transport networks between the two countries would revitalize trade across the entire region and benefit neighboring countries such as Jordan and Lebanon, fostering economic integration and strengthening the stability of supply chains. Internationally, this cooperation provides a strategic land alternative to maritime routes, increasing the flexibility of global trade and reducing shipping costs and times between Asia and Europe.
During the meeting, both sides emphasized the depth and strength of the fraternal and historical relations that bind the two countries, stressing the need to continue joint work to expand the horizons of cooperation in a way that enhances economic competitiveness and achieves the desired sustainable development goals, and brings benefit and good to the two brotherly peoples.
