Kazuyoshi Miura signs for Fukushima United at the age of 58
In a move that proves age is just a number in the world of football, Japanese football legend Kazuyoshi Miura, known globally as "King Kazu," has signed a new loan deal with Fukushima United, a club competing in Japan's third division. This comes as the player prepares to celebrate his 58th birthday, continuing to defy the laws of nature and time in one of the longest and most inspiring professional careers in the history of the game.
Return to the spotlight in season 41
"King Kazuo" is preparing for his 41st season as a professional player, a career that began before most of his current teammates and even some of his coaches were born. This move holds particular significance as it marks Miura's return to one of Japan's top three divisions for the first time in five years, after spending recent seasons in the fourth division, reflecting his continued desire to compete at a higher level despite his age.
A journey that began in Brazil and went global
To understand the magnitude of Miura's achievements, one must go back to the beginning. At the age of fifteen, he left Japan alone for Brazil, the birthplace of football, to pursue his dream of becoming a professional. There, he honed his talent and signed his first professional contract with the renowned Santos club in 1986, the same club that produced the legendary Pelé. This strong start made him an icon upon his return to Japan, where he was the first face of the J-League when it was launched in 1993, directly contributing to the increased popularity of the game in the land of the samurai.
Leading Japanese professionals in Europe
Miura's career wasn't limited to Japan and Brazil; he was a pioneer in opening the doors of European professional football to Japanese players. He had a historic stint with Italian club Genoa, becoming the first Japanese player to play in Serie A, and also had experiences with Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb and clubs in Portugal. These steps paved the way for subsequent generations of Japanese stars to shine on European pitches.
Unquenchable passion and an international legacy
The former Japanese international expressed his immense joy after signing the contract, saying, "I am extremely grateful for this opportunity, and I promise to give my all to contribute to making history. My passion for football will never change, no matter how old I get." It's worth noting that Miura boasts an impressive international record, having played 89 matches for the Japanese national team and scored 55 goals. He played a pivotal role in Japan's first-ever qualification for the 1998 World Cup, despite the shock of being left out of the final squad.
Last season, Kazuyoshi Miura played only 69 minutes for Atletico Suzuka in the fourth division, but his current move to Fukushima United confirms that his ambition is still alive, and that his story with football is not yet over.
