Grossi: The attacks near the Bushehr power plant have serious consequences in Iran and beyond
The area surrounding the plant, located in southern Iran and housing a 1,000-megawatt reactor, has been targeted four times since the start of the US-Israeli war on Iran, with the latest attack occurring on Saturday, according to official media.
Grossi said in a post on the X platform that the attacks could cause a serious radiological incident with dire consequences for people and the environment in Iran and beyond.
He added that one of the recent strikes occurred just 75 meters from the station's perimeter wall, and said: "A nuclear facility and its surrounding areas should never be targeted.".
Warning of a radiological disaster
Russia, whose experts are helping operate the plant, said the strikes threatened a radiological disaster even more devastating than Chernobyl.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated, “We reiterate our urgent call for an immediate cessation of hostilities.”
The agency analyzed satellite imagery of the site and confirmed the latest attack, which caused no damage to the facilities.
198 workers evacuated from the station
The Bushehr nuclear power plant, built with Russian assistance, is Iran's only operational nuclear reactor, according to the UN's nuclear watchdog.
Russian state media reported that 198 workers were evacuated from the plant after the latest attack, while approximately 100 Russian personnel remained on site.
Following the attack, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned that continued attacks around the plant could cause a radioactive leak that would "end lives in the capitals of the Gulf Cooperation Council, not just in Tehran."
The plant is located on the Persian Gulf coast in southwestern Iran, closer to some Gulf capitals than to Tehran.
