Fake Hajj campaigns: Fraudster arrested in Asir and official warning issued
As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims to the Holy Mosque in Mecca, security authorities in the Asir region announced the arrest of a citizen involved in organized fraud. His crime consisted of posting misleading advertisements on social media platforms, falsely claiming he could provide Hajj services at attractive prices and through illegal means, thus exploiting Muslims' desire to perform the fifth pillar of Islam.
Background and context of security campaigns
This incident comes amidst a broad security campaign launched annually by Saudi authorities as the Hajj season approaches, aimed at combating what are known as "fake Hajj campaigns." With digital advancements, fraudsters have shifted from traditional methods to using cyberspace to reach a wider range of victims. These campaigns exploit the religious yearning of many, making false promises of providing Hajj permits or comprehensive services at low prices, only for victims to discover later that they have fallen victim to fraud after transferring money.
The Public Security Directorate confirmed that the accused was arrested and initial legal procedures were taken against him, and he was referred to the competent Public Prosecution branch to continue investigations and apply the deterrent penalties stipulated by Saudi law for fraud, deception and cybercrimes.
The importance and impact of the event
Domestically, this operation reflects the vigilance of Saudi security services and their ability to monitor and track digital criminal activities, thus reinforcing the confidence of citizens and residents in government measures to protect pilgrims. It also serves as a strong warning to anyone tempted to exploit this religious season for illicit gain.
Regionally and internationally, these efforts highlight the Kingdom's commitment to protecting pilgrims from around the world. Hajj is not merely a local affair; it is a global event that brings together millions of Muslims, and any fraud not only affects the financial victims but also undermines the sanctity of the ritual and damages the reputation of the Hajj's organization. Therefore, combating such phenomena contributes to maintaining a safe and well-organized Hajj experience for all.
Call to abide by official regulations
Public Security reiterated its call to all citizens and residents to adhere to Hajj regulations and instructions, emphasizing that performing the pilgrimage is only permissible through obtaining an official permit via the channels approved by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. It urged everyone to be wary of suspicious advertisements and to immediately report any violations by calling the designated numbers (911) in the Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh, and Eastern regions, and (999) in the rest of the Kingdom, in order to thwart fraudsters and protect individuals from becoming victims.
