The General Authority for Irrigation is exploring a national plan to utilize dam sediments

I reviewed General Irrigation Authority in Riyadh Regulatory solutions to develop an integrated national framework for managing dam sediments, with the aim of transforming water and operational challenges into Economic opportunities Sustainable, in the presence of the deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Engineer Mansour Al-Mashiti.
The workshop, entitled “Dam Sediment Management: Regulatory Solutions and Economic Opportunities,” was designed to chart a strategic course in dealing with water resources.
The event was held with the participation of a number of government agencies and a select group of experts specializing in the dams, water and mining sectors.

Operational challenges

The foundation explained that the meeting primarily aims to develop an effective national framework that enhances the efficiency of sediment management, transforming it from an operational challenge into a sustainable investment opportunity.
Discussions highlighted the serious repercussions of sediment accumulation in dams, including reduced storage capacity, disruption of water regulation, and a direct increase in flood risks.

Dam sediment management workshop

The workshop addressed mechanisms to neutralize these negative effects on operational aspects, stressing the importance of finding environmental solutions that ensure the sustainability and efficiency of dams and their associated facilities.

Economic opportunities

The sessions revealed promising economic opportunities to utilize dry sediments by reinjecting and employing them as raw materials in a number of vital production sectors.

The findings confirmed that this regulatory approach will support integration pathways between the relevant sectors, contributing to increased efficiency in utilizing natural resources and developing economic returns.
