India begins world's largest population census to address social and political issues
India has begun the world's largest national census , which could reshape social welfare programs and political representation across the country.
The previous census in 2011 recorded a population of 1.21 billion; current estimates suggest the population has now exceeded 1.4 billion, making India the world's most populous country.
Stages of conducting a population census
A new census was planned for 2021 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical challenges.
The first phase of the census began today, Wednesday, and will continue across the country throughout September.
Staff will spend about a month in each region collecting information on homes and facilities , documenting housing stock and living conditions.
The second phase will record more detailed information, such as people's socioeconomic characteristics, including religion and social class. More than 3 million government employees are expected to be deployed during the year.
